UTSW Machine Learning Journal Club
Description
This Journal Club, started by James Elder and Kaitlin Trenfield in Milo Lin's lab, will run during the 2023 summer. Its focus will be on foundational papers in the machine learning field. It is expected that all attendees will have read the paper(s) prior to the meeting, and that the meeting will be a discussion of the paper(s). Given the level of interest in this Journal Club, please ensure that you will make an effort to attend all meetings.
Meetings will typically be from 2 PM to 3 PM on Wednesdays in Room G9.250A, starting on Wednesday, July 19th. The first meeting will be an overview of core concepts in deep learning, led by Kaitlin Trenfield on Friday, July 14, 2023, also in G9.250A from 2PM to 3PM.
Specifically, the areas of focus will be:
-
Generative Models (Weeks 1-4)
- Variational Auto-Encoders (Week 1: July 19th)
- Markov Chain Monte Carlo (Week 2: July 26th)
- Chapter 29 of MacKay's Information Theory, Inference, and Learning Algorithms
- Diffusion Models (Weeks 3-4: August 2nd and 9th)
- Week 3:
- Week 4 (BREAK, optional reading):
-
Encoders (Weeks 6-8)
- Graph-based Neural Networks (Weeks 5-6: August 16th and 23rd)
- Week 5:
- Probabilistic Graphical Models (PGMs)
- Graph Neural Networks: A Review of Methods and Applications
- Week 6:
- Week 5:
- Transformers (Week 6: August 30th)
- Graph-based Neural Networks (Weeks 5-6: August 16th and 23rd)
And, depending on time and interest:
- Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs)
- Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTMs)
- Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs)
Meeting information
This Journal Club will meet once a week, on Wednesday at 02:00 PM CST in Room G9.250A
The first non-introductory meeting will be on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.
However, Kaitlin Trenfield will be giving an introductory talk on Friday, July 14, 2023 at 02:00 PM CST in Room G9.102.
Meeting information will be sent out via email and posted here.
